Ran Birds are Reptiles for the first time, and the second group to come by asked me before I began if chickens were related to dinosaurs. They were surprised and delighted to see I had the perfect demo for them to show that birds are, in fact, reptiles.
When I was running It’s A Keeper two friends who didn’t know one another were really excited about playing the matching game part of it and took turns picking out the ducks without any prompting. Afterwards they both ran off to the woods together to see our red eared sliders that I told them about.
I ran Junior Explorers, and before I could even invite him to play, a very curious friend came up asking to play. The entire time, he was asking questions about the animals he didn’t know and kept repeating how much he loved animals. After finishing, he remarked that he learned so much about new animals and was so excited. He ran so excitedly to Natures Trading Post to see some of the animals in person 🙂 honestly made my entire day to see someone so excited and having so much fun after barely stepping foot in children’s.
Over in Ice Age, three boys were very excited when I told them they were allowed to explore around the wolves, the three of them also worked together to be able to move the rock back and forth. I saw them later in Space and The Woods and they were super excited about learning about space and in the Woods they were showing two other friends around, how to get to the slide, and were playing very safely for younger friends there. They were wonderful guests and now know me as “the museum lady”.
Also while in Ice Age today, I was in the Mastodon Gallery and a friend walked in and was super excited about the skeleton. I asked him what animal it kind of looked like and once he got to an elephant he was so excited about it. (His first guess was a wolf) He thought it was really cool that mastodons, wooly mammoths, and elephants all share a common ancestor and thought the difference in their teeth was “super cool”.
i was running Floor is Lava Kids at work when a large family with a handful of adults and a bunch of kids came into the area. the kids were jumping from tile to tile in circles, but the grandfather of the group stopped and read each question out loud, then stood up like he was making a proclamation and gave an answer in a loud serious actor voice before going to the next tile. Everyone in the area got into it and some folks clapped.
Later I was in the woods when the same family group came in. The Grandpa came up to me and said he wanted to thank our staff for making the day so special for his family. Thanked him and told him that watching him play the floor is lava game had been the highlight of my day and he laughed and said he had fun doing it.
I was walking by the house in kids town and a young boy walked in with the measuring tape from fix it shop. he measured a few thing along the wall by the window then went over to the family sitting at the table playing, who were not his family, and said to the mom ” I hate to break it to you ma’am but that wall’s gotta go.”
I was in ice age, and I was explaining to a child who was maybe 8 years old how incredible an American lion was. I explained the lion was one of, if not the largest cat that ever existed. Little did I know, he was a tiger lover. He replied with “but but but a tiger could smack it’s head off its shoulders with its PAW!”
Today while in the Woods I saw a family, 3 adults and 2 kids, absolutely going ham playing together (safely for our other guests), going around the tunnels, using the slide, all of that and their two little ones were having an absolute blast. The grownups said to me that they thought they were having more fun than some of the kids.
When I was doing Curious Creatures, I asked the guests if they had seen any of the animals around where they lived. The guests started telling me about all of the different animals in their backyard, and showed me a video of baby bunnies that were just born in their backyard. The bunnies were so tiny and so cute
When I was running Curious Creatures in TCM, my old english teacher from high school came up with her son and actually recognized me, it was so wild to see her here, but she’s a member and she’s interested in camps next summer for her son! Her son was doing the activity with another girl and they were taking turns matching the description to the animals.
I encountered the same group of kids twice in different places. They were a fun bunch and played the Floor is Lava and Who becomes a Fossil with me. They played the Who becomes a Fossil twice. One of them became a fossil, but they all had a hoot and holler about the options they became. They especially liked knowing how their fossil died.
I was roaming TCM in kid’s town and a kid about 5 years old came up and pointed to my crutch and said “Hey!, where did you get that! I want one.”
