  1. I overheard a family say “I wonder how long it takes for caves to actually form” and I was very happy to drop some cave knowledge on them. Me and the lady that asked chatted for a while and then she had to chase after the rest of the family because we were talking so much.

  2. I met up with a father (Zach) and 6 year old son (JT) at the very top of dino hall when I noticed Zach was crouching down and reading the info about the skulls to JT. JT asked what the braille said and Zach explained what it was and why it was needed. We spent time exploring together until I pulled out a program about fossil formation that they joined me for and every time either of them needed to move based on their points Zach would ask JT where they would move to by adding the number they were on and the number that they got. We stopped by the genetics lab and after that stop Zach told me that he was extremely thankful because JT was sooooo happy and it has been the first time in about 6 months that they spent time together since he was in the military. So of course I did the only sensible thing, I spent the next 2 and a half hours with them until the museum closed and made it the best experience for them.

I saw amazing things between Zach and JT. When meeting the animals at the cave I saw Zach explain the basic principle of change over time and evolution with the behavior for the wall lizard and why the blind cave fish have no eyes. I watched JT get all of the answers correct for the mission designer in the Explore part of the Space gallery, which is hard for even some adults. We searched for all of the hidden pumpkins in Cincinnati in Motion and Zach would ask how many they had left “we’ve found 6 and there are 10 total. How many more do we need to find?” I even got the pleasure of watching Zach explain how a steam engine works on the the Queen of the West on the Public Landing.

Overall I had an amazing time with an amazing father and son. Also, when I asked JT what his favorite part was he said “Meeting you!” It melded my heart.
